The Peoples' 20 Assembly, held in New Delhi, has issued a call to G20 leaders, who are scheduled to meet for the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9 and 10, 2023, to address several urgent demands. The assembly aims to use the G20 Summit as a platform for transformative change, fostering a new era of collaboration that transcends borders and ideologies to create a future where all people can prosper in harmony with each other and the planet.

The event, which took place on August 23-24 at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, brought together representatives from global civil society to collectively voice their demands. It engaged over 300 delegates from various parts of India and featured participation from notable civil society leaders from South Africa, the EU, South Korea, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and other countries, including virtual attendees during multiple sessions.

The assembly concluded by issuing the "New Delhi Declaration on G20 Summit," a document that appeals to G20 governments to unite in a common purpose. It emphasizes the G20's responsibility to lead the global transition toward a more equitable, sustainable, and just global order, aligning with international commitments such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Climate Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda.

The declaration highlights the shortcomings of the G20 and calls for fundamental transformations to address these challenges effectively. It also calls for an end to conflicts in various regions and urges immediate climate action through ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. Additionally, the document emphasizes the importance of economic and social equality, sustainable development, and the protection of democratic values and civil liberties.

During the assembly, nine parallel thematic sessions were held besides the three plenary sessions, each delving into one of the nine key themes including Economy and Finance, Labour, Children and Youth, Democracy and Civic Space, and Leave No One Behind, among others.

The insights generated from these discussions will contribute to policy recommendations for the upcoming G20 Summit.

Co-organized by a coalition of national and international networks under the banner of Peoples’ 20, the assembly aimed to deliberate and respond to the current Indian Presidency of the G20. The event marked an unprecedented collaborative effort to address pressing global challenges.
