A doctor was attacked over a monetary dispute in Nashik in Maharashtra and is admitted in a local hospital in a critical condition. One person has been arrested for attacking the doctor.

Dr Kailas Rathi (48), director of a hospital in Nashik's Panchvati area was attacked on Friday night with a sickle, PTI reported quoting an official.

The incident has raised concerns over attacks on doctors or medical staff and security. In last few years, there have been several incidences in the state where on-duty doctors were attacked by relatives.

The husband of one of the victim's former employee has been arrested for the attack. The woman (former employee) was accused of misappropriating Rs 6 lakh when she worked in his (the victim) hospital. She was sacked and reinstated some years later. She again took Rs 12 lakh from him but refused to pay it back," the official said.

A case has been registered against the former staffer and her husband on the complaint of the doctor's wife. The Indian Medical Association cancelled its protest march on Saturday after one arrest was made in the case, functionaries said.

In another recent incident in Nashik, a 40-year-old policeman allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver at a police station. The incident took place on Tuesday.

Inspector Ashok Najan reported for duty at Ambad police station in the morning and allegedly shot himself in his cabin. The police personnel present in the police station premises took Najan to the nearby district hospital.

As per PTI report, following the incident, police commissioner Sandeep Karnik and other senior officials reached the police station. The cause for the suicide is yet to be ascertained, and a probe has been initiated, Karnik said.
