The incident of a seven-year-old boy of mixed Kuki-Meitei parentage being burnt alive along with his mother and aunt are among the 20 cases handed over by the Manipur police to the CBI, officers said.

At the relief camp, Tonsing Hangsing had sustained a bullet injury to his head during a shootout by armed men from the “majority community” on June 4. Following the Army’s intervention, Tonsing’s mother Meena Hangsing and aunt Lydia Lourembam took an ambulance and were headed to Iroisemba in West Imphal. They were escorted by the police.

However, a Meitei mob of around 2,000 people stopped the convoy. The driver and nurse were allowed to escape while cops, who had fired in the air, had to retreat. The mob then set the ambulance on fire with them inside, the officers said. While the boy’s mother and aunt were Meitei Christians, his father, Joshua Hangsing, was a Kuki.
