The Centre has decided to demarcate boundaries of the North-eastern states through satellite imaging to settle inter-state border disputes, which are often becoming a cause of concern and sometimes even leading to violence.

Two senior government functionaries said the task has been given to the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC), a joint initiative of the Department of Space (DoS) and the North Eastern Council (NEC).

The inter-state border disputes have come under fresh focus recently after five Assam police personnel and a civilian were killed in clashes along the Assam-Mizoram border.
The idea for demarcation of inter-state boundaries through satellite imaging was mooted by Union Home Minister Amit Shah a few months ago.
The government functionaries also said the Centre has no plans to order an inquiry by a neutral agency like the CBI into the clashes, as it does not want to take any decision that may further escalate the ground situation.

‘Will move SC to settle dispute’
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said his govern-ment will go to Supreme Court to resolve the boundary dispute with Mizoram. His remarks came after Mizoram police on Friday filed criminal cases against Sarma, four senior officers of the Assam police, and two others. “I’m happy if filing an FIR against me resolves the issue. But I will not allow our officers to be investigated. We will go to SC to resolve the dispute,” he said. Earlier in the day, Mizoram Chief Secretary Lalnunmawia Chuango said the state government is ready to withdraw the FIR against Sarma. “I will speak with police officer who filed the FIR, and if there is no legal fit, we would like to remove the Assam CM’s name from the FIR.”
