Three boys died and 11 others are undergoing treatment in the government hospital ICU following suspected food poisoning at an orphanage home in Tirupur on Thursday, officials said. The boys had rice mixed with “rasam” and laddu for dinner on Wednesday. Some of them vomited and had dysentery. On Thursday morning, they had breakfast, after which their condition deteriorated and some fell unconscious, officials said.

Tirupur District Collector S Vineeth said the samples were sent for examination. Strict action will be taken against the private orphanage home—Sri Vivekananda Home for Destitute—if found guilty, he said. Police are investigating and inquiring the people running the home. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has asked the state chief secretary to probe the deaths on urgent basis.
