India recorded its highest number of daily Covid-19 cases in over two months, at 47,092. The last time the daily cases were higher than this was 63 days ago, on July 1, when the country reported 48,786 cases.

The number of active cases also climbed to 3,89,583, according to Union health ministry's data updated on Thursday morning. The active cases rose by 11,402 in a span of 24 hours.

The death toll increased by 509. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.8 per cent, up from 2.61 per cent on Wednesday.  Of the total national figures, Kerala reported 32,803 cases and 173 deaths.

‘Full vaccination must for mass gathering’

In view of the upcoming festive season amid the scare of the third Covid-19 wave striking the country, the Centre on Thursday said mass gatherings have to be discouraged and full vaccination should be a prerequisite if attending such a congregation is essential. “People should celebrate festivals at home, follow Covid-appropriate behaviour and embrace vaccination,” it said. It added that about 300 cases of delta plus variant of SARS-CoV-2 have been detected in India so far. The government reiterated that the second wave was not over yet.

Depression can be classified as serious illness: HC

Depression can be classi-fied as a serious illness, especially in the context of the pandemic, the Gujarat High Court has said. It observed while setting aside the cancellation of registration and admission of an engineering student, by a government college, for not taking requisite exams due to depression and suicidal thoughts. The student had challenged this in the HC stating that he had suffered from “severe depressive episo-des with suicidal ideation”, which started in January 2020 and peaked in May-June that year due to the pandemic situation, which is why he couldn’t take the exam. The depressive cycle, when he suffered, was during the pandemic. It was a period of widespread despondency, it noted.
