A journalist was shot dead by unidentified people in Araria district of Bihar early on Friday, police said. Vimal Kumar Yadav, 35, who worked for a Hindi daily, was killed at his home in Premnagar.

Murder at dawn

“The assailants knocked at the gates of Yadav’s house around 5.30 am and opened fire as soon as he opened the gates,” the Bihar police tweeted. Yadav died on the spot. “The deceased was said to be involved in an old dispute with a neighbour. All angles are being probed into,” said Superintendent of Police (Araria) Ashok Kumar Singh.

Link to brother’s case?

According to a report in NDTV, Yadav’s younger brother, a sarpanch at the time, was also shot dead two years ago and he was the prime witness in the case. Yadav had been warned against giving his testimony in the court against the suspects in his brother’s murder case. The BJP lashed out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government. Its state chief Samrat Choudhary said the incident showed that “democracy was in danger in Bihar”.
