Yerawada jail officials mum on proposal to move Qasab

Yerawada jail authorities are tight-lipped about the proposal to move Ajmal Amir Qasab from Arthur Road jail to Yerawada Central Jail. It is believed that the Lashkar-e-Taiba operative who launched attack in Mumbai will be shifted to Yerawada even though highly placed sources in the prison said they had not been informed about such a development. Deputy Superintendent Padmakar Bhalerao said, "We have not received any communication in this regard."

Additional Director General (Prisons) Rajendra Sonawane added, "I will not comment on Qasab."

However, sources inside the Yerawada jail claimed that the state government had recently done a survey to zero in on the proposed location to build the high security special cell to house Qasab. These developments clearly suggest that the government has no intention of keeping Qasab at the Anda cell ufffd egg-shaped high security cell ufffd which houses 18 such dreaded criminals.

The speculation that Qasab would be shifted to Yerawada Jail gained momentum after the Mumbai Police sent a proposal as they felt there was not enough security in Arthur Road jail.

Another highly placed officer said that Qasab would be shifted a few days prior to his death sentence. He said the Mumbai Police and the state government were waiting for the confirmation of his sentence by high court.

The officer said considering the amount that was spent on the construction of a special cell at Arthur Road jail, the government would consider this option after scrutinising all the aspects attached to it.
