Woman found hanging inside police station's toilet in Assam

A woman from Shillong was found hanging inside the toilet of Dispur police station here when she was brought there from a local hospital where she was in a restless condition, an Assam police spokesman said today

Guwahati: A woman from Shillong was found hanging inside the toilet of Dispur police station here when she was brought there from a local hospital where she was in a restless condition, an Assam police spokesman said today.


At around 8.30 pm, a security supervisor of the local private hospital came to Dispur Police Station and informed that a woman was found in a restless condition in the hospital premises last night, the spokesman said. The officer in charge of the PS immediately assigned two women police officers to enquire into the matter.


On their arrival at the hospital, the attending doctor handed over the lady to the PS staff with a report and the police officials brought the woman to Dispur PS at around 9.30 PM, the spokesman said. At around 10.20 pm the woman went to the toilet attached with the PS and when she did not come out, the police staff broke open the door and found her hanging inside the toilet, he said.


Immediately she was taken to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital where the attending doctor declared her brought dead, the spokesman said. A hand bag with PAN Card and Electoral Registration Card and other items were found from which her identity could be ascertained as Victoria Dayoun Kharkongor (39), daughter of Stephen Pyngrope of 16 (a) Nongrimbah West, Shillong, he said.

Senior Police Officials of the Police Commissionerate arrived at the Dispur PS immediately to take stock of the situation. Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Mukesh Agrawal has ordered an enquiry by Jt. Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, N M A S F Haque and submit his report within two days about circumstances leading to the death of Victoria Dayoun Kharkongor. The order also asked Haque to fix responsibility for lapses, if any, on the part of police personnel.
