The Murthys are clinging to their roots for daughter Akshata's wedding: a simple ceremony, Mysore-style food and no irulli and bellulli (onion and garlic), in keeping with their Brahminical origins.

What's cooking

Sudha Murthy, wife of Infosys Technologies chief mentor N R Narayan Murthy, short-listed the menu for the pre-wedding ceremony on Saturday, the Devara Samaradhane, consisting of over 32 traditional dishes.

Narayan Murthy is from Mysore, so Sudha directed city caterer Adigas to stick to 'Mysore Brahminical type of food'.

"Sudha madam asked us to cook dishes without using irulli and bellulli," said G M Suresh Hegde, general manager, Adigas,

J P Nagar. "She also said the food should be strictly Mysore Brahmin."

Fresh fruit juices only

There were other requests: No readymade soft drinks, only fresh fruit juices to be made and served on the premises.

"She was particular about the food being served on plantain leaves," added Hegde. "She said that the catering should be traditional and systematic. Over 100 staff from Adigas, traditionally dressed, were part of the catering service," added Hegde.

The Murthys ordered food for about 600 guests, mostly relatives, which included welcome drinks, breakfast and lunch.

Wallet factor

The family has booked Chamaraju Kalyana Mandir at Rs 1.3 lakh for two days August 29-30. Traditional rituals will be performed in the mandir, said the mandir staff.

"They haven't asked for specific arrangements so far," said M R Nanjundaiah, manager, Chamaraju Kalyana Mandir.

For the wedding lunch today at The Leela Palace in Bangalore, a total of 1800 guests are expected,u00a0 though the Murthys have retained their instructions to the chefs: simple south-Indian vegetarian cuisine.
