War of words results in riot

After CM Yeddyurappa's political secretary allegedly called JD(S) state chief HD Kumaraswamy 'a maid' his supporters ran amok and attacked his house

Earlier yesterday afternoon, Puttaswamy had released documents stating that former Chief Minister HD Deve Gowda, his son Kumaraswamy and other family members had grabbed 82 acres of government land at Holenarasipur.

Puttaswamy, while speaking to members of the press allegedly called Kumaraswamy 'a maid' but confirmed to MiD DAY that he did in fact ask Kumaraswamy to prove he really was his father's son.

The challenge resulted in over 80 members of the JD(S) waiting for Puttaswamy to get home before trying to attack him. The mob chanted slogans asking that the secretary be killed and damaged two cars, including a government vehicle.

Puttaswamy managed to get into his house, in Vyalikaval, before the mob could get to him. His guards, one gunman and two police escorts, managed to keep the mob at bay by locking the front gates in time.

Puttaswamy said, "They rushed at me. I have no idea how many were there. I didn't count how many tried to kill me. They have damaged my house." He added, "Kumaraswamy has no doubt instigated them to attack me. I'm certain he's behind this."

He added, "Yesterday, he made derogatory allegations against me and the CM so I challenged him to prove it, if he really was his father's son. And if he can't prove his allegations then he is not his father's son."

Home Minister R Ashok arrived at Puttaswamy's residence at 11.40 pm to survey the damage himself. He said, "I came here as soon as I heard. There is too much corruption in politics now and it's just not good." He added, "We should be helping people. Problems must be solved through democratic means, and not violence."

G Ramesh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division), said, "Most of the attackers managed to get away by the time we got here. We have arrested 24 men who are currently at the Vyalikaval police station."

Among the arrested is noted JD(S) leader Narayana Swami.
