Gnahdi was shifted to Etah at around 1.30 a.m. "for security reasons", said Mukesh Arora, jailor of the Piliphit district jail.
The decision came barely a few hours before the shutdown called by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the entire Bareilly region to protest Gandhi's detention under the National Security Act (NSA).
The Mayawati government had late Sunday invoked the NSA against Gandhi for his reported hate speeches and mob violence during his arrest Saturday.
