In a freak mishap, two persons were killed and another injured, after they were hit by a luggage door of a state-run 'Shivneri' AC bus, which opened automatically in Khadaki near Pune, police said on Tuesday. The mishap occurred on January 28, when the trio was standing near a bus stop on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, a senior police official said.

"The victims were struck by the left-side hydraulic luggage door after it opened automatically when the bus hit a speed-breaker," the officer said. The deceased were identified as Dipak Sorte (55) and George Ashirvadan (27), while Arogyadas Swami was injured. "The trio sustained serious injuries and rushed to a nearby hospital, but Sorte and Ashirvadan were declared dead on arrival," the official added. The bus was on its way to Dadar in Mumbai, but got broke down and hence the passengers were shifted to another bus, he said.

"The mishap occurred when the empty vehicle was being taken to a bus stand near the Pune Railway Station, after it was repaired by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) staff," the officer added. According to the officer, the bus driver Santosh Madne has been arrested and case for causing death by negligence and careless driving was registered.

"We will investigate to see whether there was any negligence on part of the MSRTC employees," he said.
