With his three-year period as Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) coming to an end yesterday, Vishwas Pandhare had one final parting gift for the city up his sleeve — a safety application just for women.

Pandhare announced that the women’s safety application will be launched by August 15, and was meant for all women who faced harassment in any form, be it eve-teasing, molestation or stalking. The app is meant especially for women who travel late in the night, whether on foot or on two-wheelers.

Following the success of the Pune Traffic App, the department has decided to launch the women’s safety app in the same format, said Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic administration) Kavita Nerkar. “We are yet to decide whether it will be an update to the existing traffic application, or if it should be a separate launch,” she said.

The application, which is currently in the testing phase, will allow users to add five people to an emergency contacts list. However, the contacts on the list should also have the app installed on their phones for it to work effectively, Nerkar added.

“During an emergency, the user just has to tap twice on touch screen phones, or press the lock key twice on keypad phones. This will immediately send a text message to the emergency contacts. After receiving the message with an ID number, one can use it to track both the current location and the route on which the woman is travelling in real time,” she added.
