What chance does a lightweight police officer have of standing up to a politico and continue to have a career on the right path? The answer lies in the fate of assistant inspector (traffic) Sachin Suryavanshi.

The cop who was embroiled in a controversy when he was allegedly thrashed by some legislators in the Maharashtra assembly premises on March 19, a day after he stopped and fined Bahujan Vikas Aghadi MLA Kshitij Thakur’s vehicle for speeding on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, was moved to Sangli Police Training School yesterday.

Though senior police officers claimed that Suryavanshi had asked for the transfer, some media sources reportedly got a call from the cop, saying that he was unhappy with the posting.

“He himself had requested for a transfer to Sangli,” said Sanjeev Dayal, director general of police, Maharashtra.

Bambavade in Sangli is Suryavanshi’s native place. Following a breach of privilege motion against him he was suspended earlier this year, but the order was revoked last month and he was reinstated. “Maybe he is upset as he has been given an auxiliary posting in a police training school. But no senior would have wanted an officer like Suryavanshi in Sangli, which is a political hot spot dominated by NCP, and with elections round the corner,” said a police official, who did not wish to be named.

After his reinstatement, Suryavanshi was asked to sit in Worli traffic control room because nobody in the department wanted to risk him on the streets, sources said.

MiD DAY tried to contact Suryavanshi, but his cellphone was switched off and his house at Goregaon police quarters was locked.

Past matters
In March, MLAs Ram Kadam (MNS) and Kshitij Thakur had been arrested by the crime branch for allegedly assaulting the cop, attached to Worli Traffic Police, inside the Vidhan Bhawan premises.

They were later released on bail.

During the Budget Session, five MLAs including Thakur and Kadam were suspended from the assembly over the matter. On July 24, their suspension was revoked.
