One would expect the official supervising all prisons in Western Maharashtra, including Yerwada Central Jail, to be arrogant, but a single meeting with Deputy Inspector General (Prisons-Western Maharashtra) Ravindra Kedari had such preconceptions flying out of the window. Kedari is a self-effacing pucca Puneri.

"I am proud to belong to a city which boasts of such a rich cultural heritage," said Kedari. He was born in Sadashiv Peth and did his primary schooling in the city. His family then shifted to Mumbai where he completed his schooling. He returned to the city to join S P College and went on to complete his Bachelor of Law from ILS College. He joined the police force in 1978. "I have been posted as Superintendent of Police (SP) in Naxalite affected Gadchiroli, Senior SP at Yavatmal, Parbhani and Hingoli, DIG at Mumbai headquarters, and SRPF commandant," he recalled.

But his constant travelling does not keep him away from his favourite hobby reading. Kedari's favourite author is John Grisham. "I have read all his books," he says proudly.

Knowledgeable
Advocate Aseem Sarode, who has worked with Kedari said, "From his body language, I first thought Kedari is a strict officer, but I saw he has a human side found rarely in his profession." He added that when students from abroad meet him to know more about Indian Prison Law, they are taken aback by his knowledge of laws in their countries. As Kedari himself said, "Job satisfaction lies in the extension of knowledge."
