University to organise seminar to educate school principals about changes in admission process, semester system

To clear doubts about the changes, the varsity is organising a two-day seminar for school principals from across Delhi, wherein they will be given detailed information about the DU admission process, the courses on offer and the newly introduced semester system.

Avoid chaos
The seminar, 'Transition from School to University,' is being conducted for the first time by the varsity and is scheduled to be held in mid-February. Orgainsers of the event feel if initiative is not taken at this stage, the admission process will be chaotic as students will be unaware of the changes.

Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean, Delhi University Students' Welfare, said, "Every year there are many doubts raised by students seekingmayb admission at DU. So this year we have planned a seminar for school principals explaining teh process. They will be taught about how to calculate the percentage of best scores in four subjects, various courses offered in different colleges of the varsity and other details of the admission process. We are introducing the semester system from this year and that too will be explained to them."

"The Common Aptitude Test for English (CATE), required for admission in English (Hons) course in various colleges, is another issue about which students have doubts. We want the principals to pass on their knowledge to Class XII students who will seek admission in colleges this year," said Tuteja.

Open house
A list of around 1,200 schoolsu00a0-- private, government and Kendriya Vidyalayas to whom invitation will be sentu00a0-- have been prepared. The seminar will be like 'Open Days', during which university officials provide information about courses, colleges and admission procedures, and clarify doubts and misconceptions among prospective candidates and their parents. "We are waiting for the final approval of the vice-chancellor. The date will also be finalised in day or two," said Tuteja.

In a month's time, students will appear for their Class XII board examinations and will apply to colleges for admission. "I have heard about the new semester system at DU. But I do not understand the process. Hope our school principal will be able to help us," said Jaya Gupta, a Class XII student, planning to enroll in English (Hons.) course at the varsity this year.

12,000 Number of private, government and Kendriya Vidyalayas who will be sent invitation to participate in the seminar

What happened last year

Last year, Delhi University launched its admission helpline to inform students about various undergraduate courses and sale of admission forms. On the first day itself, student counsellors received over 450 calls, mainly from students enquiring about the cut-off percentages at various colleges, hostel facilities and entrance examinations for different courses. Several parents called up to find out various details. A total of 16 student counsellors were attending calls and were trained for a week.
