With 88.32% passing percentage in the state (regular students), up by 5% from last year, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) declared the highest ever SSC (Std X) result on Tuesday.

The worst and the best: 904 schools in Pune division clocked up a perfect passing percentage, whereas not a single student passed in a total of 35 schools.

Among the nine divisions in the state, three divisional boards, including Pune, marked a passing percentage of above 90, and not a single division saw the share of passing students dip below 80%.

Konkan division tops the state with a passing percent of 95.57, while Latur board brings up the rear with 81.68%. With 88.84% Mumbai is at the fifth position.

Out of a total 15,49,784 regular students who appeared for the SSC examination in March 2014, a total of 13,68,796 students passed. Girls, once again, outshone boys with a 90.55% result against 86.47% for boys.

“The increase in passing percentage shows how well the students have done with the revised syllabus of the state board. This is the second exam on the revised syllabus. And compared to last year, the passing percent has raised by 5. The new syllabus is at par with the central board,” said Gangadhar Mhamane, MSBSHSE chairman.

But there are pockets of abysmal performance. In as many as 105 schools in the state, not a single has student. And the highest number of these schools — which scored a 0 passing percent — is in Pune (35) and Mumbai (45) divisions.

At the other end of the spectrum are the 3,949 schools in the state that recorded cent percent result. And of these, 904 are in Pune and 801 in Mumbai divisions.
