New Delhi: A special investigation team (SIT) formed by the Centre is set to reinvestigate about 75 closed cases related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the national capital.

The move is certain to ring political resonance in the poll-bound Punjab. Sources claimed that once the probe commences, investigators would issue advertisements regarding these cases and request the victims and witnesses to join the probe.

Another source claimed that the move could spell fresh trouble for Congress leaders Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar, accused of actively instigating the rioters to attack Sikhs to avenge the killing of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards as a retaliation to Operation Blue Star.

Over 3,000 people lost their lives in the riots that followed Gandhi’s assassination on October 31, 1984. Delhi alone accounted for 2,733 deaths.
