Resul: An inspiring saga

Resul Pookutty's story is as inspiring as that of Jamal Malik in Slumdog Millionaire. Hailing from an average family in a remote village, Vilakupara, in Kerala's Kollam district, Pookutty struggled his way to make it with his sheer grit and unwavering determination.

While the whole the country is celebrating Slumdog's feast, Resul's home village is simply elated after he has won Oscar for sound mixing in the film.

He was the youngest of eight children. Though Resul's dad, a government servant, wanted him to be a doctor, he didn't get through the entrance test. After graduating in physics, he joined law college in Thiruvananthapuram in 1990.

His classmates and teachers at the law college have only fond memories about him.

"He was an ideal student, highly respectful of his teachers and always committed to studies. I vividly remember his personal traits had earned every teacher's recognition," said Thwaha, who was a lecture at the law college those days.u00a0

He says that even while pursuing studies, he had nurtured the passion to make it in the film world. "I realised that his mind was wandering elsewhere because law was not the place he wanted him to be, even though he was a committed student," said Thwaha, who has now retired.

"He mastered the art of grasping the sounds from the shooting sites and later editing it and incorporating it in the film, a technique yet to be adopted by the Indian film industry, but largely used in Hollywood," he said.u00a0

Second year into the law course, he got admission at Pune Film and Television Institute with first rank.u00a0 After gaining degree from the institute, he came back to complete his law degree, recalls Adv S Jayachandran, who was Resul's classmate.

"We studied together for the exams. He was highly brilliant and I used to tell him that he'd make it big in life. He had a high regard for the society and the downtrodden and he could easily empathise with the poor. I believe that this feeling for the society must have helped him in a big way in shaping this great film," said Jayachandran.

He recalls that he had shown his interest in films even in those days.u00a0
