While some say the quota is inadequate, others damn the decision and term it as a 'political gimmick'
All major political parties in the country are divided over the government's decision of granting 4.5 per cent reservation to minorities within the OBC quota. While some have said it is a hasty decision and is quite inadequate, the Opposition parties have damned the move and have termed it as a political gimmick.
Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh (in pic), who is also in charge of the party affairs in Uttar Pradesh, discarded the contention made by the Opposition parties. "Muslims were shorn of the benefits of the quota. Now, they will have 4.5 per cent out of the 27 per cent reserved for backward castes. It's a promise that we had made to them during the polls and have fulfilled it," Singh said.
However, the BJP has asserted that it's a "political stunt" by the Congress party to woo Muslim voters before the UP assembly elections.
'Not done'
"It's absolutely wrong to have another quota within the quota. We are against any religion-based reservation," said BJP leader Ananth Kumar after he had a meeting with top party leaders Lal Krishna Advani, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Nitin Gadkari.

Interestingly, CPI (M) leader Prakash Karat said that the cabinet's decision to grant 4.5 per cent reservation for minorities within the OBC quota was inadequate. "The Ranganath Mishra Commission report had recommended 10 per cent reservation for Muslims and five per cent for others belonging to the minority community," he said.
Also, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav claimed that was quota for minorities was insufficient. "The cabinet should have keep 18 per cent reservation," he asserted.
