A Right to Information (RTI) activist has been found dead hanging in a lodge in Pune on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Tukaram Chavan, a resident of Ajantha nagar in Chinchwad, Pune.

The circumstances behind how the Pimpri-Chinchwad based 37-year-old died are shrouded in mystery. The death of Chavan, who used the RTI Act, adds another name in the victim list of whistleblowers in the country.

Loni-Kalbor police, which falls under jurisdiction of Pune rural police, is probing the case.

According to the police, "Chavan was working as an RTI activist for a decade and had used RTI to gain information about the SEZ land in Pimpri-Chinchwad area, the Pune Expressway and also about Aditya Birla hospital. Chavan is married and has two children. On Tuesday evening, he had booked the room at Yasraj Lodge in our jurisdiction. On Tuesday night, he ordered food."

He added,"On Wednesday morning, the room-servant knocked on the door, but didn't get a response. Later in afternoon, at around 1 pm, the attendent informed the manager. Later they alerted us. We broke open the door and found him hanging by the ceiling fan. We are probing the case. Primarily it appears suicide but still we will confirm after scrutinizing CCTV camera."
