With a chunk of students scoring more than 90% in the state, the cut-off percentages in junior colleges are set to go up by at least 2-3 percentage points

The highest-ever passing percentage in SSC exams has also inflated the number of students who secured above 90% in the state, and this would make a direct impact on the centralised admission procedure (CAP). Cut-offs for admission at reputable junior colleges in Pune and Mumbai are likely to by least by 2-3% compared to last year.
In the Std X results declared yesterday, as many as 40,797 students across the state scored 90 and above percentage, higher than last year’s figure of 31,093. Moreover, out of the 15,49,784 students who appeared for the SSC board exam, as many as 3,20,090 (20.65%) passed with a distinction, that is, above 75%, and they will flock to the better-ranking institutes, making the admissions process more competitive.
Add to the mix high-performing students from other parts of the country who come to the city for higher education, and the admissions race only gets tougher. “According to my prediction, the cut-offs of reputable colleges in Pune will increase by 2-3% over last year’s,” said Balasaheb Owhal, assistant education director (Pune division), who is in charge of the Std XI CAP.

Surekha Dange, vice-principal of SP College, said, “Last year for Science stream, my college’s cut-off was 90%. But this year, with the increase in the results, it seems that the cut-off would go up till 92-93%.”
She added, “Moreover, for Std XI admissions, we get a huge response from outside the city as well. Many students from districts like Osmanabad, Beed, Latur and Ahmadnagar prefer Pune to continue their education.” Modern College’s cut-off last year was 87% for Science and 78% for Commerce stream.
“Considering the pump in the scores, I think the cut-off percentage for both Science and Commerce streams would increase by 2-5% in my college,” said R S Zunjarrao, principal of Modern College.
