In Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district, a pregnant woman was at the receiving end of a hellish experience at the hands of her in-laws, who tried to murder her after an astrologer apparently predicted that she might become mother to a girl child. Girija, wife to a tenant farmer in Boduswami Kadriga village in Mutukur, Nellore, gave birth to a girl child last year, after which she became the target of constant harassment of her in-laws.

They even forced her for more dowry. After she became pregnant once again, Girija's mother-in-law took her to an astrologer, who predicted that she would be having a girl child. After this they started forcing her to undergo an abortion.

This took an ugly turn one night, when as she slept, Girija's husband and in-laws poured kerosene on her in order to set the woman on fire. She woke up just in time as her mother-in-law lit the match and raised an alarm after which neighbours got her hospitalised. Her husband and father-in-law have been arrested on charges of attempt to murder.

Police sources say that the kerosene was mixed with some uknown acidic substance due to which she sustained about 30 per cent burns.
