Padma Shri awardee and renowned Gujarati folk singer Diwaliben Bhil passed away at the age of 83 years after a brief illness on Thursday.

A self-taught singer, Diwaliben did not take a formal education in music and singing. She was famous for her unique voice and had sung numerous folk songs and bhajans in Gujarati.

Her songs include 'Halo Ne Kathiyavadi Re', 'Kokilkanthi'.

She received the Padma Shri award in 1990.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death and expressed his grief on Twitter.

Sad to know of passing away of well known Gujarati folk singer Diwaliben Bhil. Her contribution to the cultural sphere is monumental. RIP.
