On raiding his residence in Daund, the police recovered two laptops, five laptop bags, 13 mobile chargers, four USB modems, fake election cards, RTO permits and an Indica car. Gaikwad's accomplices Raju Samuel Gaikwad alias Gokul, Rajesh, Hanumant and Kishor are absconding.

"Gaikwad has confessed to have committed 50 such offences of which items worth Rs 5.5 lakh have been recovered. The gang was active in areas like Deccan, Kothrud, Airport road, Bund Garden, Samarth, Sahakar Nagar, Cantonment, Chaturshrungi, Hinjewadi, Pimpri, Wanawadi, Vishrantwadi, Yerawada and others.

Gaikwad has also committed offences in other cities like Thane, Navi Mumbai, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur and Solapur," said Police Inspector Sunil Pawar. "The gang would identify bank customers coming out with money pouches or laptops and divert their attention through various means.

For example, a gang member would ask a customer who had just got into his car to come out by lying that his tyre was punctured or oil leaking. And when the unsuspecting customer would come out to check, another member would flick the bag containing money or his laptop kept in the car."
