Court rejects bail plea of acid attackers on seeing victims' photos

The law is not blind, as most of Bollywood claims.

A Delhi court refused to grant bail to two people accused of throwing acid on two minor girls in south Delhi after the prosecution produced gory photographs of the victims.

The sisters (name withheld to protect their identities) lost their sight after Afroz and Shabbir threw acid on them at Zakir Nagar on October 14. The two girls suffered severe burn injuries on face and chest.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) SK Sarvaria,u00a0 while listening to the bail application of the accused took special mention of the photographs as the girls are not in condition to appear before the court. Court termed the entire incident "grave" and dismissed the bail plea. "In view of the circumstances in which the offence has been committed, the bail application of the accused is dismissed," the court said.

While Shabbir was arrested by the police during investigation, Afroz is still at large but managed to file a bail application through his lawyer. The accused who were riding a bike carried a jug of acid and sped away after throwing it from a close range on the two girls.

Daughters of retired school teachers, the girlsu00a0 had earlier complained about the two accused that they often misbehaved with them. "The accused are known bad characters in the locality and the girls had spurned their advances," said a cop from Zakir Nagar Police Station, requesting anonymity.

The incident took place even though the girls had informed the cops about their stalkers. Afroz had proposed marriage to one of the sisters days before they were attacked. The prosecution said the girls have lost their sight and are still at the hospital, therefore, the accused did not deserve bail.
