A 68-year old woman was mauled to death by her son's pet rottweiler dogs. The unfortunate incident took place early on Thursday in the Avadi locality of Western Chennai and left the elderly woman's face, almost unrecognisable.
The victim, Gowri, lived with her 82-year-old husband, Chandrasekar and her son, Santosh. While Santosh and his family lived on the first floor of the house, the elderly couple occupied the ground floor.
The tragedy occurred when Gowri went to the terrace of her house at 1;30 am, where the two dogs were kept. However, it is suspected that she was unaware of their presence. According to a report in the Times of India, an officer investigating the case is quoted as having said, "Other members of the family were asleep when the dogs attacked the woman. Gowri's husband Chandrasekar is hard of hearing and does not recall when she left their bedroom on the ground floor of the house."
The officer reportedly added, "Neighbours said that the dogs reacted ferociously at the sight of the elderly couple who did their best to keep a safe distance from the animals. There was a lot of blood everywhere. The dogs had almost completely ripped out her hair. Both animals had blood on their paws and fangs."
Rottweilers are guard dogs and can be ferocious if not properly socialised from an early age. They are even banned in several countries. Police officers have registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The fate awaiting the dogs remains unknown.
