Cops watch helplessly as BJP, MNS, Sena men dance on police vans, shout slogans and bring traffic to standstill on Alandi road

The Vishrantwadi police watched helplessly yesterday as political activists of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena danced on police vans and shouted slogans while protesting against inaction over the issue of women soliciting on Alandi road near Vishrantwadi.
The activists got irate when the Vishrantwadi police allegedly abused them. They also allegedly tried to turn over a police van.
As protesters blocked Alandi road for three hours, traffic was thrown completely out of gear, resulting in heavy jams in both directions. After the activists were pacified, it took two more hours for the traffic to be restored to normal.
The activists calmed down after Inspector Vishwanath Ghanwat of the Yerawada police station intervened and assured them that action will be taken against officers guilty of not keeping prostitution off the streets.
"We have complained to the Vishrantwadi police several times on the issue of women soliciting on Alandi road, especially between the Magazine Corner in Dighi and Wadmukhwadi, but no action has been taken," BJP activist Balasaheb Modak said. "Yesterday afternoon around 3.30 pm two women were caught by locals and the police control room was informed. Soon a police jeep came to the spot, but instead of taking action against the women, the police hurled abuses at people."
Modak alleged that the policemen were drunk.
"PSI Salvi and another constable who abused the people were drunk. So we have resorted to a road blockade as a protest," Modak said.
Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Gajanan Babar and district president Umesh Chandgude also reached the spot and joined the protest.
"Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) Sanjay Jadhav, Assistant Commissioner of Police Suryavanshi and Inspector Manik Akolkar of Vishrantwadi didn't bother to visit the spot," Modak said. "Yerawada Inspector Ghanwat was sent, but the incident which took place does not come under his jurisdiction."
DCP Jadhav said, "I don't know anything about the incident and I am busy with some important meetings."
Inspector Akolkar said, "We have not received a complaint in this regard. When we got the call from the local residents, we sent a police team, but the party workers are alleging that they were drunk. We are conducting a medical test of the policemen."
