"I pray from the depth of my heart that he wins Oscar. It will be a proud and historic moment not only for India but the whole music fraternity," said Farida Khanum from Lahore. Rahman is nominated for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for his numbers "Jai ho" and "O saya" in the rags-to-riches drama about a Mumbai slumdweller, which is also vying for Best Film and Best Director awards at the Oscars.
The composer has already bagged a Golden Globe, BAFTA, Satellite Award, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association award for his music in the film. "Rahman is rendering music from the age of 16. He understood Sur from a different perspective and came up with unique style. God has been graceful to him and you feel divinity in his Sufism oriented songs like Hazi Ali and Khwaza mere Khawaza," the Ghazal singer said.
Khanum's all time favourite Rahman song is "Dil hai chota sa" from the film "Roja" which marked his debut as a movie composer. "His melodies touch your heart. He has a huge fan base in Pakistan. I strongly feel that art and artistes are above all boundaries," she added.
Expressing similar sentiments, Ghulam Ali said, "He is amongst the most talented musicians of this generation. He deserves the Oscar. Not only Oscar but each and every award for his work." Ali said he would love to sing for Rahman.
"If I have a chance I would definitely love to sing for him. He has his own style which is simple yet melodious. His vast range keeps him above of all," said the maestro from Karachi. Rahman enjoys a huge fan following across the border.
