This group that literally calls itself the friend of trees and water JalaTaru Mitra started in June by Priyaranjan Anand Marathe (24), a software engineer from Aundh.

"Milind Kale (35) and Sachin Walunj (34), who are both software engineers from Aundh, were working individually for the environment since three years and joined my group this year," said Marathe.

The objective of this group is to grow more trees. "Soil conversion and water harvesting are our main concerns.
For a greener Pune, we want to promote sustainable development. We also want to decrease the dependency on municipality for water," added Marathe.

The group, which initially had five members, has 30 members now. Marathe said, "It's nice to see trees growing." The group meets weekly to discuss programmes, and sometimes, they even meet every day during a project.

"We publicise our group through word of mouth. Also, we have a Google group and we keep in touch with members via SMSes, calls and e-mails."

The group recently visited Hiwarebazar, Nagar district, four hours from Pune. "The village is an ideal model, which is recognised by world bodies for sustainable development. They conserve soil and carry out rainwater harvesting. Ironically, the neighbouring village depended on tankers even for drinking water," added Marathe.

JalaTaru Mitra celebrated Vriksh Puja on Diwali. "We also distributed saplings for people to plant," added Marathe.

Walunj said, "This is a different field for me, it has become a primary concern."
