Srinagar: A jawan of paramilitary force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was killed and 8 others, including a policeman, were injured yesterday when terrorists attacked a security convoy in Zakura area on the outskirts of Srinagar.

"A three-vehicle convoy of the SSB was returning after the day's law and order duties on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, when terrorists attacked it outside the industrial estate in Zakura area where the SSB troops are camped," an official said. The terrorists were believed to have fled the spot.

One jawan of the SSB was killed and 8 others were injured in the attack, an official said.

The injured, who included a policeman, have been admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched search operations to track down the terrorists.

The attack, the second on security forces in the Kashmir Valley in less than a week, took place outside the highly sensitive Zakura industrial area that houses many offices and factories of small and medium businesses in Kashmir.

This is the first militant attack in the city since the encounter at Nowhatta on August 15 in which a CRPF commandant was killed and nine other personnel were injured.

Earlier this week, two terrorists were killed after a three-day-long gun fight with security forces in Pampore area on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
