On Diwali night, dacoits beat up 3 women of family, make off with their jewellery

Three women and two youths suffered injuries after a gang of dacoits assaulted them at their residence at around 2 am on Sunday morning in Kesnand near Wagholi on Nagar Road

Dacoits ransacked the house for about an hour and decamped with booty worth Rs 2 lakh.The injured have been identified as Leelabai Sambhaji Jadhav (60), Laxmi Ashok Jadhav (22) and Kamal Yallappa Dande, Dnyaneshwar Rama Jadhav (22), and Dattatrey Baburao Sulke (17), all residents of Kesnand.u00a0


PI N S Nihalje of Lonikand police station said that five suspects posing as policemen knocked on the door of Jadhav’s residence. When the family did not open the door, they barged into the house after breaking the door open with steel rods and big stones.


The suspects were wearing lungis and shorts and were speaking with each other in Hindi and Marathi. After entering the house, they started thrashing Leelabai, Laxmi and Kamal and demanded their jewellery and cash. “They even beat up one Navnath Jadhav, who was sleeping in another room.


Navnath managed to escape from the house by taking advantage of the dark,” he said. Hearing cries of the Jadhav family, two youths, Jadhav and Sulke, who were sleeping on the terrace of their house across the road woke up. When they tried to rescue the Jadhav family, the dacoits pelted stones at them, injuring them. The three injured women were lying in the house after the suspects ran away with the valuables. They contacted gramsevak Nitin Gavde who in turn informed police about the dacoity at around 5 am.u00a0

Rohidas Dhokle, a local, had returned home from work at around 1.30 am. He had seen a gang of about 10 men armed with swords, iron rods and other sharp weapons. After the dacoity at Jadhav’s residence, Dhokle tried to alert other villagers by calling them up on their mobile phones. Till the time help arrived, the suspects had escaped.
