Nurse attempts suicide at Sion hospital

A second-year nursing student attempted suicide in the civic-run Sion Hospital’s nursing quarters on Wednesday, after consuming poison late in the evening. The 18-year-old student, Namrata Gavit, was admitted to the general ward of the hospital the following morning around 9 am, after her roommates found her unconscious.

While the girl’s roommates did notice that she had vomited later in the night and looked unwell, they rushed her to the casualty ward of the hospital when she lost consciousness in the morning. On condition of anonymity, a nurse said, “I have worked with her for several months before and though she always seemed disoriented, we had no idea she was depressed.”

Gavit’s family members arrived in the city on Friday evening. However, nurses at the hospital say that even her relatives were not aware about her emotional state. When SUNDAY MiD DAY visited her in the ward where she is currently recuperating, she was yet to recover from the ordeal and was in a disoriented state.

“I am bored of life and don’t want to live anymore,” she said in a feeble voice. The nursing student is now undergoing counselling sessions in the hospital. Dr Avinash Supe, dean of the hospital said, “She was suffering from organophosphate poisoning (OP) which is a very common form of poisoning. She is out of danger now.”

Humanities for Docs
Medical students at Sion Hospital will now learn humanities as a subject in the five-year MBBS syllabus that will have spiritual health as one of its components. “This will help in developing their skills to deal with stress and bring a positive change in their attitude,” said Dr Supe.
