It was expected that Congress city leaders would take to the city's roads in big way to condemn Arvind Kejriwal's allegations against Congress President Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra.

But, not a single senior Congress leader was present at the city unit ‘s demonstration that was called yesterday. Only 25 junior-level party activists were present at the stir at Alaka Talkies Chowk.

Kejriwal had made serious allegations against Vadra and Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid in the last two days. Kejriwal has alleged that Vadra had been given property worth Rs 300 crore by DLF in a series of suspicious transactions and was also demanding Khurshid’s resignation following allegations of financial irregularities worth Rs 71 lakh by his trust that was meant for physically challenged persons.

Against this backdrop, the city unit of the ruling party had declared an agitation. When MiD DAY visited the spot, local police were relaxed and waiting for the Congress activists. Only 10 party activists were present till 11.20 am. Finally, at 11.30 party workers started chanting slogans against Kejriwal and his charges against the ruling party leaders. They condemned Kejriwal for his undemocratic way of making sensational allegations against Congress leaders for cheap publicity.

During the stir, police did not allowed the party workers to burn an effigy of Kejriwal, and therefore the party workers started hitting Kejriwal’s photograph with shoes and slippers.

The agitation was presided by Sachin Adekar, president, Nehru Stadium Block Congress Committee. Reacting to the thin participation, Adekar said, “We are agitating at our own level, and all party leaders in the city are with us. They are not present here because these leaders are fighting at a higher level against Kejriwal’s baseless allegations.”

When contacted, Abhay Chhajed, City Congress President, however, disagreed with the small participation and absence of any senior Congress leader. He said, “There is nothing wrong with ground level party workers conducting an agitation. In fact, it is our wish that our workers conduct agitations on their own.” u00a0
