Speaking to reporters, Gorhe said that the case should be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). She told reporters on Wednesday that she had visited Giri's family on Tuesday to pay her respects and had also written to the police asking them to protect the family.
"Kalpana's family is facing tremendous pressure, as they are receiving threatening calls. I have written letters to senior police officers requesting them to provide immediate police protection to the family," she said.
She added that one of the accused, identified as Mahendra Singh Chauhan, was the president of the Latur Youth Congress and that his father too was a senior politician in the party. "The Congress should rusticate both of them in order to provide a fair trial," she added.
Gorhe also used the conference as an opportunity to attack the Congress, saying that not a single leader from the party had come to pay their respects to the Giri family.
"Rahul Gandhi speaks about women empowerment. Former CM Vilasrao Deshmukh, who belongs to Latur, also declared policies for women in 2001. Yet, such heinous crimes take place in his constituency," she jibed.
