Bharane gang member Rakesh Ghule hacked to death in afternoon attack by 5 assailants in Kalewadi eatery


Rakesh Ghule, a 22-year-old man believed to be a member of the Rakesh Bharane gang, was murdered by five assailants in broad daylight at Raghunandan Hotel in Kalewadi yesterday around 2.30 pm.

As the news spread, tension prevailed in the area.

Additional police forces from Vishrantwadi, Bhosari, Sangavi police station were called in to keep the situation under control.

There was heavy bandobast at Aundh General Hospital where the body of the deceased was sent for post mortem. Police sources speculate a response to this incident in days to come.

Five assailants, who attacked Ghule with chopper and sickle, ran away from the spot but were nabbed by Crime Branch Unit III within hours. According to police sources, Ghule was with Bharane gang since 2007. According to Ghule's friends, he had gone to attend a wedding at Sonai Hall and had gone to the restaurant to have tea along with his friends.

When he came outside to answer his cell phone, the assailants attacked him with sharp weapons. He sustained injuries on his hands, head and other parts of the body. He was immediately taken to a private hospital where he was declared dead.

Senior Police Inspector G S Mandgulkarof the Hinjewadi police station said Ghule was arrested on an attempt-to-murder charge in March this year and was out on bail. The case was registered at Bhosari police station.

Ghule was a resident of Bopkhel and used to run a restaurant in Kalewadi.

The assailants took away the sharp sickle they used to attack Ghule. The police found two choppers at the crime spot. The team of Crime Branch Unit-III have arrested five suspects.

According to police sources, officers from Crime Branch Unit-III, have held three persons identified as Santosh Puravat, Hyder Sayyed and Avinash Bansode, Vicky Nandu Bihari, Anand Gulab Garud, in the case. The search for the remaining suspects is on.
