Six-year-old Sandhya Thakur, who miraculously survived the Mumbra building collapse, was finally shifted to an orphanage on April 29 from the civic-run Sion Hospital where she was recuperating
Thakur was rescued from the rubble after 18 hours. Dr Avinash Supe, dean of Sion Hospital, said, “We handed Sandhya over to the Thane police on Monday at 8.30 pm after completing the required paperwork. She was shifted to Janani Ashish Sanstha in Dombivli, which is a charitable trust that takes care of orphans.”

The miracle survivor was shifted to Sion Hospital on April 6 from Thane Civil hospital. Thakur had sustained serious head injuries and a minor collar bone fracture after being trapped under the rubble that used to be a seven-storey building in Shilphata near Mumbra for 18 hours before being rescued.
Her mother, Kiran and sister were pulled out dead while her father’s body is missing. Sandhya has been recuperating in the paediatric ward of the hospital where two female constables guarded her round the clock while she was recovering from her physical and emotional wounds.
During the first two weeks Sandhya was admitted in the hospital, she was unaware about her mother’s death and would repeatedly ask for her. “The hospital staff had developed a close bond with the little girl as all of us would take some time out to play with her whenever she started missing her family. However, as her relatives remained untraceable, we had to bid goodbye to Sandhya with a heavy heart,” said an ayah in the paediatric ward of the hospital.
