When purple set the mood
Our diarist spotted a real gem on the sidelights of a school match. Parents and relatives of Cathedral & John Connon (Fort) boys’ U-14 team wore purple (the school colour) lipstick during their District Sports Office (DSO) inter-school final at St Xavier’s ground, Parel on Friday. The team defeated Don Bosco (Matunga) 4-2 via tie-breaker to win their maiden DSO title. We’re pretty sure that the colour code had a little something to do in their win. Pic/Sudari Iyer

When Manish scripted a fairytale
It’s a known fact that thousands flock to the city of dreams to find success. Reality shows on TV have been one such way for contestants to rise to fame in a short span. Twenty-one-year-old Punekar, Neelam Virwani who came to Mumbai to participate in one such show that selects young, talented fashion models, recently lived out a fairytale-like ending to her story. When style guru Manish Malhotra came on the show to showcase his upcoming bridal collection, he offered Virwani an opportunity to walk for his upcoming show. “I was impressed. Neelam used her height to her advantage, and the way she carried my new bridal collection really stood out. I couldn’t resist but offer her to walk for my upcoming show,” shared Malhotra. Talk about walking into famedom.
Parties and poutines
After giving the city an eponymous food truck and regaling the night owls at a Lower Parel speakeasy pub for a while now, Ashish Sajnani makes a foray into catering as well. Last evening, the dapper restaurateur hosted a soiree at a cook studio in Khar to announce his venture, OPA Hospitality Catering and Events that aims to curate over 50 cuisines from across the globe for parties. “The idea is to offer exquisite delicacies with top-notch customer service. Thanks to our expertise in the restaurant segment, we have culinary experts from various cuisines to whip up dishes that can be authentic or inspired as your palate,” says the restaurateur.

And this isn’t the only thing that’s keeping him busy. He is also testing waters for a new QSR concept, Poutinewalla (did you spot it at HR College in the last two days?) that brings Canada’s famous snack, Poutine (French fries in gravy), in desi avatars like Bhaji and Butter Chicken. It will work as a pop-up until an outlet is set up in Bandra, within a few months.

Lokmanya Tilak at 160
Barring a few historians, we’re pretty sure that few would have remembered that today is the birth anniversary of Bal Gangadhar Tilak. But to jog our memory on the 160th anniversary of the leader who stood by the demand for Poorna Swaraj or complete independence from British rule, online platform Mintage Museum has created a video that traces his legacy in coins and postage stamps with highlights of his life and our freedom movement.

England call for Pranav
PRANAV Dhanawade, the 16-year-old schoolboy cricket wonder who plundered a record 1009 runs in an inter-school game last January, is going places. Literally.

On Sunday night, Pranav will head to Old Blighty as part of the Worli Cricket Club team. After landing in London, the Avinash Kadam-managed outfit will head to Leicester. Rookie Pranav couldn’t have asked for a better base than this county since it’s home away from home — lots of Indian families, plenty of restaurants serving up Indian fare and he shouldn’t be shocked to see an Indian wedding being celebrated on the streets.
Another reason why Pranav will not feel homesick is the presence of his coach and mentor Mobin Shaikh, who is Star CC’s head coach on tour.
In 1990 and 1991, Shaikh played in the Bradford Mutual League in Yorkshire for Interlink club so it’s a welcome return for him.
Hopefully, Pranav will experience the better side of the English weather.
