The delayed work of constructing a partially-raised pedestrian subway near City Pride Multiplex on CD Deshmukh Road (Pune-Satara Road) proved to be fatal yet again, with a 26-year-old man being killed after his bike crashed into a truck yesterday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Ankush Sadashiv Bharekar (26), a resident of Vazeghar in Velha tehsil. The truck driver, Rammurat Malai Pal (47) from Hadapsar, has been arrested by Bibwewadi police on charges of causing Bharekar’s death and negligent driving.
Bharekar’s cousin Ravindra has lodged the FIR against Pal. According to Bibwewadi police, Ankush Bharekar had left for his office around 9 am, and was turning left at Dugad Chowk.
The left side of the road at the junction is still in a dug-up state, owing to which Bharekar collided with the heavy vehicle, which was also headed towards Satara.
Bharekar’s head came under the rear wheels of the truck and he died on the spot. The traffic on Satara road and Bibwewadi road was affected for nearly an hour as the accident took place in the peak hours.
Local residents and traders also protested at the junction against the apathy of the civic administration in completing the pedestrian subway work in scheduled time. The subway was sanctioned in 2007 and its work was started two years ago.
