Man who mowed down BMC workers arrested

On reading reports about the accident, Akshay Bajaj, the driver of the white car that hit the two employees, surrendered to the Gamdevi police station on Friday

Man who mowed down BMC workers arrested

The driver of the car that hit the two BMC workers who were on their way to work in the early hours of Wednesday has been found. Akshay Vasudeo Bajaj (32), a Worli resident came forward and surrendered to the Gamdevi police on Friday, after he read reports about the accident.

On Wednesday morning, Laxmiben Makwana (52) and Prakash Parmar (52), two conservancy staffers with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were on their way from August Kranti maidan to Peddar Road where they had been assigned the day’s duty.


Around 6 am, when they were travelling on their two-wheeler, a white car mowed them down near Villa Theresa School on Peddar Road. Makwana, who was riding pillion, died on the spot, while Parmar suffered critical brain injuries. He is currently under observation at the Intensive Care Unit of Jaslok Hospital, since had lost a lot of blood. MiD DAY’s report on Thursday

Dr Tarang Gianchandani, acting medical superintendent, Jaslok Hospital, said, “Parmar’s condition is critical and he is still on ventilator. Though he is unconscious, his vitals (blood pressure and pulse) are normal.”u00a0Senior police inspector Pradeep Lonankar of Gamdevi police station said, “When news of the incident came out in the papers, Bajaj himself surrendered to us on Friday.

He has been taken into custody and was booked for rash and negligent driving under sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 134 (a)(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act.” Police also have the custody of the vehicle.

Bajaj, a businessman, resides at the controversial Shubhada building in Worli, which had been in the news for the unauthorised alterations made in the flats/offices by its owners, most of whom are top ministers and politicians – Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, BJP leader Gopinath Munde are one of the few who own homes/shops in the building.u00a0
