A 30-year-old man fell into a 35-ft water-filled trench at the construction site of five star hotel Lemon Trees at Connaught Road near Pune Railway Station. His condition is unknown as fire officials were unable to trace him till late evening.

The fire tenders at Naidu fire station were forced to abandon the rescue operation after two hours of extensive search, as a live electric cable was left open in the pit.

"We had to wrap up the rescue operation because the officials at the construction site failed to cut the electric supply and that stalled our rescue efforts," said firemen Jalinder Munjal.

The incident took place at 4.15pm yesterday.

An official from Lemon Tree, on condition of anonymity, said "The site is currently being developed by a contractor. According to the description given by the guard, a man came running from somewhere and slipped into the pit."

Senior Police Inspector Suhas Nadgauda at Bundgarden police station said, "The incessant rain made it difficultu00a0 for the fire brigade to continue their efforts. We have registered the case of drowning, we will resume the operation after rain stops."
