MMRDA's executive committee meets to take major decisions

It included appointment of Louis Burger Group Inc. for the preparation of techno-economic feasibility study, detailed project report and bid documents for the appropriate improvement of the JVPD junction with either a flyover or underpass.

The committee also expected to prepare detailed cost estimates for the proposed construction.

The JVPD Junction is a very busy area and sees traffic congestion due to continuous vehicular movement. The proposed flyover/underpass here, therefore, is expected to help solve the traffic chaos.

The Committee further appointed consultants for two more projects to be implemented in the metropolitan region. Firstly, project management consultants have been appointed for the construction of the proposed flyovers at Shil-Phata, Kalyan and Mumbra Junction.

The flyovers at the three junctions will provide considerable relief to the traffic congestion due to heavy vehicles plying continuously day and night. Secondly, project management consultants were appointed for the construction of a proposed bridge to connect Vasai and Bhayendar over the creek. M/s Stup Consultants are the appointed project management consultants for both the projects.

The Committee arrived at two more decisions which benefited the metropolitan region - development of the 5.2 km long road running from NH-8 to Naigaon railway station and construction of a rail over bridge at Naigaon and connecting roads for the creek bridge.

The Committee also decided to lend Rs.80.42 crore to the Mira-Bhayendar Municipal Corporation for its Storm-Water-Drainage Project (cost Rs 178.71 crores) being implemented under the Maharashtra Golden Jubilee Urban Renewal Mission.

The loan is afforded to the Mira-Bhayender Municipal Corporation for a period of 15 years with 10% interest per annum. The project will help the Corporation mitigate flood-like situations arising during monsoon by maintaining river water levels.
