Following Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's instructions to take appropriate action against the contractors responsible for accidents at various ongoing infrastructure project sites in Mumbai, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started fining the parties responsible for the mishaps.
MMRDA has imposed an Rs 10 lakh fine on the contractor of the ongoing metro rail project for the mishap that took place at the Airport Road station on Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar (VAG) in Andheri (East), which caused one person’s death and left 11 others injured. The contractor was also fined Rs 10 lakh for the accident that took place while launching a girder on JP Road in Andheri (West). The family of the deceased workers has been given compensation as per the rules.

The contractor was fined Rs 10 lakh and a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each was given to the family of the two children who drowned in a water pit at the metro site at Asalpha last year. The contractor was also fined Rs 5 lakh more for various other accidents on the metro corridor.
Another contractor working on the monorail project was fined a total of Rs 31.5 lakh for accidents at the site and the contractor was charged Rs 5 lakh fine for the accident where a beam of the metro rail collapsed near Mysore colony.
The contractor of the Lalbaug flyover was fined Rs 25 lakh and another Rs 5 lakh fine was also collected from the consultant for the accident where the girder slab of the flyover had collapsed.
