High Court blast caused by low intensity explosive: Delhi Police

Delhi Police on Wednesday confirmed that the blast outside the High Court was caused by a low-intensity explosive.

According to police, the explosive, which went off at 1.15 p.m., was kept in a packet near a car belonging to a lawyer.

"It was not a life-threatening blast... It was a small blast... The explosion took place in a small plastic bag. The bag was kept outside the car, just near the bonnet," said Delhi Police Special Commissioner (Law and Order) Dharmendra Kumar.

Eyewitnesses said there was a package near the spot from which smoke was coming out.

"We heard some noise among the cars parked outside the court, so we came running to the spot. We saw something burning there and smoke was coming out of it. At first, people were scared, later the parking helper poured water on the car to douse the fire," said Rakesh Yadav, an eyewitness.

"We found a bag near the car and soon after we dragged it, the smoke started coming out of it that smelled like gunpowder. We found some nails in the bag that spread on the blast premises," he added.

Another eyewitness Sonu Kumar, an auto driver said: "I heard a loud blast soon after parking my auto. We found nails, but we don't know what actually it was. A lawyer standing near the car has suffered minor injuries. He got scared and ran away along with us."

The car, Ford Figo, belongs to Delhi High Court advocate Rajiv Jain, who had parked the car this morning before entering the court premises.
