First we spoke to three students from different streams in Fergusson College. They said people who had nothing to do in the college entered the campus through the rear gates that opened out to the hills. Students also complained that the hostel rooms were poorly maintained, inviting trouble especially at night.
Manasi Deshpande (19) and Ruchira Chaudhary (19) ufffd both students of FC College ufffd said, "As far as hostel security is concerned it's pretty safe out here, but when it comes to the campus and night programmes held in college, it's an issue to look into as there are many 'unguarded openings into the college."
Another girl on condition of anonymity said: "People living in the slum area behind the college cause trouble especially after 6.30 pm. Unknown people flock into the college from the open compound wall at the back of the building. We brought this issue to the notice of the management, but were told that there are cases pending in the court and no construction can be carried out."
Ruchita Bhujbal (18), studying in the same college, said, "There are many entrances and few security personnel. The college authority should let in people only after registering their I-card details, but sorry to say nothing like that happens."
ILS Law College students said that although the college premises seem to be safe, venturing outside it ufffd particularly on the Vetal hill surrounding the campus ufffd was dangerous. Every year at least three to four instances of robbery on the hillock are registered.
A girl studying in ILS on condition of anonymity said: "I had to stop my exercise regime after I noticed several groups of men drinking and playing cards in the afternoon."
Principal speaks
Principal of Fergusson College Dr Ravindra Pardeshi said: "There's no point in creating a boundary wall on the western side, as that's the point from where locals access the Fergusson College road. We can't block that road. Whenever there was an incident reported, we have informed the police."
