HC junks PIL challenging ban on photography of RBI building

The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed a PIL challenging the RBI's decision prohibiting the general public from taking photographs of its building and premises in south Mumbai.

The PIL was filed by city resident Arul Mozhi Selvan, after the Reserve Bank of India in its reply to his letter stated that due to security concerns the general public has been restrained from taking photographs and video of its building and premises.

The RBI in its reply in January 2015 had said the land on which the building stands is owned by the central government and is in a prohibited area, and for the safety and security of the building and its staff photography and videography is not allowed.

"We fails to understand how this petition and the issue raised in it falls in public interest. The prohibition is due to security concerns. Today you (petitioner) want to take photos of RBI, tomorrow you will want to take photos of Lok Sabha," a bench comprising Justices A S Oka and A A Sayyed said.

The court also said that it was refraining from imposing costs on the petitioner for filing a frivolous plea.
