75% of swine flu deaths in Pune have been from rural areas

According to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 20 per cent of Punekars have developed herd immunity against H1N1. Also, according to an audit by the state health authorities in the last fortnight, only 25 per cent of those who died of swine flu so far were from the city.

However, PMC officials said that it was not time yet to let one's guard down. "It's true that most deaths are being reported from rural Pune. This does not mean the city can relax. The lower fatalities in the city could be the result of early reporting of disease and timely treatment," said Dr R R Pardeshi, health officer, PMC.

Herd immunity
"A study by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) indicated that about 20 per cent of the city population has developed herd immunity or group immunity against the virus. Better protective measures along with increased immunity has led to lesser number of deaths in the city," said Dr Pradeep Awate, joint director, Directorate of Health Services.

"Though it is true that swine flu situation has definitely improved within city limits and death rate is low, it isn't the time to slip," said Dr Pravin Shengare, joint director, Directorate of Medical Education and Research.
