The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, passed a resolution to this effect. The resolution was moved by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is also Leader of the Lok Sabha, and seconded by Singh.
Soon after the Cabinet meeting, the Council of Ministers also met.
The Prime Minister thanked the allies for their support to the UPA coalition in the last five years, a senior minister said. RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and LJP chief Ram Vilas Paswan, whose parties received a drubbing in the elections, also attended the meeting.
Prasad, when approached by newsmen, simply said that his party would extend unconditional support to the government. While Prasad, who contested from two constituencies, lost one, Paswan was defeated in the elections.
The Prime Minister will submit the resignation of his Council of Ministers to the President later in the day.
