Upgradation work and replacement of existing pipes with ones of larger bore promises to increase water flow to city

A major part of the city will see taps remaining dry until Saturday afternoon. The supply was cut off yesterday morning, in view of the scheduled up-gradation by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) of the Cauvery project pipeline in T K Halli.Although the pipes were realigned within 15 hours, the city will not see a pint of water until tomorrow afternoon.

Better days ahead: With the pipes realigned, the city will get 500 mld
of water, unlike the usual 135 to 300 mld

For the good
The task to replace existing pipes with two new pipes much larger in diameter was overseen by 15 BWSSB engineers, along with a workforce of 150 labourers at a spot 120 km outside the city.

With the pipes realigned, the city will be showered with 500 mld, unlike the usual 135 to 300 mld that ran through the pipes earlier.

Narayanan, chief engineer (Cauvery Project), said that the delay in resuming supply to the city is because of the distance of the Ground Water Reservoir in the Cauvery.

"The water ridges won't be filled until the afternoon, after which it has to travel all the way to the city. We're not holding it up; it's just that it takes time," he added.

The Cauvery Project will set BWSSB back Rs 700 crore, while the Bangalore-TK falls section of the project costs Rs 450 crore.

BWSSB linking works for Cauvery 4th Stage and 2nd Phase required shutdown of Cauvery 2nd and 3rd stages yesterday and today, which will affect East, North and Central Bangalore.
